Early Life and Educational Background

Mayer was born in 1953 in New York City to Edna and Arthur C. Mayer. His family then moved 27 miles north to Ardsley, NY, where he attended the Ardsley public school system. He went on to receive a B.A. at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, with majors in both Creative Writing and Literature, and in Drama. He worked as a video scriptwriter for 2 years, researching the careers of managers and dramatizing their work lives under the supervision of J. Sterling Livingston, founder of the Sterling Institutein Washington, DC. In 1977, Mayer enrolled in the doctoral program in psychology at Case Western Reserve University where he studied psychological assessment with Professor Sandra J. Russ, completed his M.A. degree, and then worked in the intelligence laboratory of Douglas K. Detterman, where he completed his Ph.D. in 1982.
