George Herbert Mead was a philosopher and psychologist, considered among the founders of the pragmatist movement along with Peirce, James, and Dewey, and associated with the school of symbolic interactionism in sociology. At the time of his death, Mead was chairman of the department of philosophy at the University of Chicago.
Early Life and Educational Background
Mead had a long but relatively unusual academic career. He was born in South Hadley, Massachusetts, on February 27, 1863. After obtaining his AB degree from Oberlin College in 1883, Mead had a brief stint as a tutor followed by some years working for a land surveying company, at which point he decided to attend Harvard in 1887 to study both philosophy and psychology, where he was influenced particularly by Josiah Royce.
