Early Life and Educational Background

Handel was born on April 27, 1967 in New Hyde Park, New York. He was in a double major undergraduate program within the State University of New York (SUNY) system. In 1990, Handel completed the program earning a BA degree in Physics from SUNY Geneseo and a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from the University at Buffalo. He earned his MA and PhD degrees in Clinical Psychology from Kent State University in 1997 and 2000, respectively. Handel’s research mentor at Kent State University was Yossef S. Ben-Porath. Handel completed his Predoctoral Clinical Psychology Internship at Eastern Virginia Medical School in 2000. He has been a licensed psychologist in Virginia since 2001.

Professional Career

Handel has been on the faculty at Eastern Virginia Medical School since 2000. He spends about half of his time engaged in the provision of clinical services but also teaches courses for multiple training programs at EVMS (Psychiatry Residency, Predoctoral...
