Definition

The desmoplastic ameloblastoma is an unusual variant of intraosseous ameloblastoma. It is characterized by extensive stromal collagenization. This variant differs from conventional solid and multicystic ameloblastoma in not only its histopathologic features but also its clinical and radiographic presentation.

Clinical Features

  • Incidence

The incidence is unknown. Desmoplastic ameloblastoma comprises approximately 4–13 % of all ameloblastomas. Some studies suggest the relative frequency may be slightly lower in Japan compared to America and Europe (Philipsen et al. 2001).

  • Age

The average age at diagnosis is 43 years, with a range of 17–72 years. Among females, there is a peak in the fourth and fifth decades, whereas among males, there is a peak in the sixth decade (Philipsen et al. 2001).
