Description

Lines, first described by Blaschko in 1901, representing a pattern assumed by many different nevoid and acquired skin diseases on the human skin. They do not correspond to any nervous, vascular, or lymphatic structure and differ from the system of dermatomes. Although the embryological basis of these lesions still remains debatable, they may present visible embryonic migration paths of clones of ectodermal cells that carry genetic disorders. Another explanation might be that they are a result of an inborn error of morphogenesis due to a single mutant gene or stretching of the skin during embryogenesis.
