Abstract
As nail growth measurements are used frequently in clinical trials, it is important to understand the techniques used, as well as the advantages and shortcomings of these methods. In this chapter, we will describe the history and current use of nail growth evaluations. Furthermore, factors affecting nail growth rates are medically important, because while modifying the rate of nail growth by itself may not cure an abnormal nail, when used as an adjunct with other treatments, it may provide a more rapid and complete cure. Therefore, in this chapter, we will also discuss factors that have been shown to increase and decrease nail growth rates, as well as those factors proven to have no effect.
