Georgiy Sedov – is a Soviet icebreaking steamer, known for its unprecedented drift in the Arctic in 1937–1940. The G.S. was built in England in 1909 and was originally called the Beothic. In 1915 the Russian government bought the G.S. from Hudson Bay Company and the ship was renamed after Russian Captain and Polar explorer Georgy Yakovlevich Sedov. In 1920 the G.S. took part in the First Soviet Arctic Kara Sea expedition to the estuaries of the Yenisei and the Ob rivers. In 1928 the G.S. participated in the search for survivors of U. Nobile expedition on board the Italia airship, which crashed north of the Svalbard Archipelago. In 1929 the G.S. went on a Soviet Arctic Institute expedition exploring Franz Josef Land and organizing the first geophysical observatory in Tikhaya Bay.
