Person Perception Is Ubiquitous and Important

People judge each other all the time: when dating, the persons dating judge each other in terms of how good a match they would be as a couple. Their judgments may then decide whether they will spend their lives together. Teachers judge their students in terms of their academic potential and achievement. Their judgments may have a great impact on the students’ future careers. In turn, students evaluate their teachers’ teaching skills, and these evaluations may play an important role in hiring decisions. Personnel managers judge employees and applicants in terms of how much they could contribute to the goals of their organization, and these judgment determine who gets, maintains, or loses a job. Psychiatrists and psychologists judge patients in terms of mental illness, and these judgment influence decisions as to whether a person should begin therapy, needs medication, and/or should be hospitalized.
