Peer rejection:

Peer rejection is a negative social event in which an individual is deliberately excluded or isolated by his or her peers from social interaction or from social relationships.

Introduction

Human beings have an innate need to belong (Baumeister and Leary 1995). When an individual experiences rejection, he or she may therefore experience a variety of negative psychological, physiological, and/or behavioral outcomes. There are various forms of social rejection that lead to these negative outcomes, such as rejection by family members, rejection by potential or current romantic partners, and rejection by peers in which an individual is rejected by those who are theoretically the individual’s social equals. This entry will focus exclusively on gender differences in responses to rejection by peers.
