Definition
The increased prevalence of mistreatment, both lethal and nonlethal, of children by a biologically unrelated step-parent, compared to by a genetically related parent.
Introduction
Cross culturally, folklore and fairytales have portrayed step-parents as menacing and potentially life threatening to their unrelated offspring. Over the last 30 years, a body of literature has demonstrated that this portrayal is, in fact, reflected in the real world as a significantly increased risk for the child of an unrelated parent to be a victim to child abuse and homicide, a phenomenon referred to the Cinderella Effect (Daly and Wilson 1999). An evolutionary explanation of this fictional phenomenon, based on kin selection theory (Hamilton 1964) and the subsequent Hamilton’s Rule, predicts that a lack of shared genes between a step-child and parent will discourage altruistic behavior and investment in this offspring.
