Introduction
Jill Savege Scharff, born in Arbroath, Scotland, in 1944, is an adult and child psychiatrist and psychoanalyst who works in the Washington, DC, area. She is best known for her writing on object relations theory and practice especially in application to work with couples and families. In 1996 she became cofounder and codirector of the International Psychotherapy Institute and is founding chair of its International Institute for Psychoanalytic Training. She has been at the vanguard of using technology to reach patients in remote areas and to promote distance learning between and across different cultures. She has published 55 articles and authored or coauthored 22 books translated into six languages. As an editor of free psychotherapy books, Scharff has helped distribute over 800,000 psychotherapy classics as free downloads to psychotherapists in 224 countries.
