Introduction

Graham Spanier has contributed in various realms related to couples and families that have significantly advanced the field, namely, with the Dyadic Adjustment Scale and extensive research. Spanier has authored over one hundred scholarly publications such as seminal article, “Measuring Dyadic Adjustment: New Scales for Assessing the Quality of Marriage and Similar Dyads,” and several books like Parting: The Aftermath of Separation and Divorce.

Education/Career

Dr. Graham Spanier’s early career was centered on research and scholarship. He earned two degrees from Iowa State University, a bachelor’s degree in sociology with a minor in psychology and mathematics in 1969, followed by a master’s degree in sociology with a minor in psychology in 1971. He holds a Ph.D. in sociology from Northwestern University (1973) where he was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow and NIMH Doctoral Fellow.
