Introduction
The Journal of Family Therapy (JFT) is a professional, peer-reviewed journal founded in 1979 in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK). Its initial aim was to give voice to the developing UK family therapy community. The journal was originated within the UK-wide Association of Family Therapy (AFT), founded in 1976 by a group of family therapy teachers including Gill Gorell Barnes, Arnon Bentovim, Dora Black, and Robin Skynner, with Alan Cooklin as its first Chair. AFT, as a founding member of the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), established the professional regulatory framework for family therapy with agreed training standards and placed systemic family therapy as one of the eight therapeutic modalities acknowledged in the UK.
