Definition

The Second General Conference of the Latin American and Caribbean Bishops, or the Medellin Conference, or CELAM II, was convened by Pope Paul VI (1963–1978) from August 24 to September 6, 1968, in Medellin, Colombia, to apply the teachings of the II Vatican Council (1962–1965) to the present needs of the church in Latin America (Cabretero 1999). The opening of the conference was made by the Pope himself marking the first visit by a pontiff to Latin America. 249 participants attended the conference (Saranyana 2002: 126).

Introduction

The immediate background of CELAM II can be traced to the fall of 1965 during the last days of the II Vatican Council. At that time Paul VI gathered the bishops of the steering committee and teams of CELAM to mark the 10th anniversary of the creation of CELAM.
