Abstract

Giovanni Francesco Burana, a philosopher and a doctor in medicine, is well known for his translations of Prior and Posterior Analytics and Averroes commentaries, which have been republished many times in the Renaissance, starting from the Giunta edition in 1552. At a very young age he translated music treatises (Aristides Quintilianus, Manuel Bryennius) for Franchinus Gaffurius in Milan. Then he studied and taught logic in Padua, as a pupil of Gerolamo Bagolino, but he left early the teaching in order to study and practice medicine, probably in Verona. However, he continued to study logic, bequeathing translations and commentaries on Aristotelian texts.
