The Gambia is the smallest country on the African continent, with a land area of 11,925 km2 (4,361 mi2) and a population of 1.7 million in 2010. Located in West Africa, the country occupies a narrow strip of land along the Gambia River and is bordered by Senegal to the north, south, and east (Figure 1).
