Located in South America, the Republic of Chile occupies a long, narrow piece of land between the Andes Mountains to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. It borders Peru to the north, Bolivia to the northeast, and Argentina to the east, with an area of 756,096.3 km2 (or 291,930.4 mi2) (Figure 1) and a population of 17 million (INE 2013).
