The Union of the Comoros consists of three of the four main islands in the Comoros Archipelago: Ngazidja, Ndzwani, and Mwali. The fourth iland, Mayotte, is a French overseas department. The island group is located in the Indian Ocean between Mozambique and Madagascar and covers a total surface of 2,170 km2 (838 mi2) with a population of 717,500 (Figure 1). The country is one of the poorest in the world, with total GDP for 2013 of US$595 million and $859 per capita (World Bank 2013). Agriculture (ylang-ylang, vanilla) contributes 44 % to GDP and employs 80 % of the population (AFDB 2012). The country depends heavily on diaspora financing, foreign grants, and donor organizations.
