The Republic of Côte d’Ivoire (or Ivory Coast) is located in West Africa and occupies an area of 322,460 km2 (124,502 mi2). It borders Liberia and Guinea in the west, Mali and Burkina Faso in the north, Ghana in the east, and the Gulf of Guinea in the south (Figure 1). Yamoussoukro as its capital, Côte d’ Ivoire has a population of approximately 20 million (United Nations 2012). The official language is French, though it is estimated that over 65 languages are spoken in the country.
