Ecuador, surrounded by Columbia and Peru (Figure 1), is Latin America’s ninth largest country (283,561 km2, including the Galapagos Islands). It has two official languages (Spanish and Quichua) and a population of 14.9 million (2011) with a rapidly growing middle class. Petroleum accounts for over half of the export earnings.
