Abstract

The discussion concerning the etymology of the word vampire has continued for more than a century now, and it has produced many more hypotheses than can be reasonably examined here. This chapter only reviews the most plausible ones, but it also contains a discussion of the phonetic, morphological, semantic, historical, and cultural-historical constraints, which can be used as guidelines for evaluating those propositions that have been omitted here.
