Abstract
Low back and neck pain are common conditions in the general population with a high social and economic burden. Imaging is generally not warranted for uncomplicated back pain but can play an essential role in diagnosing and managing patients if used appropriately. This chapter introduces the concept of the appropriate use criteria for imaging in patients with back pain and aims to define a subset of patients that can benefit from bone SPECT/CT of the spine. Finally, the five subsections that follow are introduced, highlighting the major pathologies of the spine that can be assessed using bone SPECT/CT.
