Abstract

Sesamoid bones and accessory ossicles are small corticalized bony fragments that are often present as normal variants in the foot and ankle region. By definition, sesamoids are found along the course of a tendon, while accessory ossicles represent unfused ossification centers. In the majority of cases, these ossicles are an asymptomatic incidental finding; they may, however, also be the trigger for overuse injuries, fracturation, and degenerative pain syndromes. Additionally, these ossicles can easily be confused for avulsion fractures. In this chapter, we aim to provide some knowledge on the imaging characteristics of sesamoid and accessory ossicle pathology by reviewing some typical cases.
