Abstract

The pelvic girdle connects the axial and appendicular skeleton through the hip joints. The hip joint, or acetabulofemoral joint, has load-bearing and locomotive roles: it is capable of movement in three planes (flexion and extension; abduction and adduction; internal and external rotation). This chapter discusses the bony and cartilaginous anatomy, muscular and ligamentous attachments of the pelvis and hip joint.
