Abstract
Pain in the distal aspect of the foot is common and has a number of aetiologies. Metatarsal stress fractures are the most common sports-related injury and the subject of the earliest medical reports of the phenomenon since the mid-1800s. These fractures remain a significant problem, particularly in middle and long-distance runners, and early diagnosis is the key to treatment. The most common site of fracture remains the second metatarsal bone because of its anatomical peculiarities. Other causes include metatarsophalangeal synovitis, sesamoiditis, and fractures such as the Lisfranc injury.
