Abstract

Anterior knee pain is common among runners and has a global prevalence of 15 to 45%, particularly in females and younger runners. The causes of anterior knee pain are highly variable and range from limb malalignment, subtalar pronation, and neurovascular changes to muscle imbalances in the quadriceps and structural abnormalities of the retinaculum. Bone scintigraphy is particularly useful in the early phase of presentation, particularly for the diagnosis of reflex sympathetic dystrophy (complex regional pain syndrome). The delayed image is helpful for the diagnosis of chondromalacia of the patella and enthesopathy of the patella.
