Abstract
A 42-year-old unstable asthmatic who had been on frequent oral corticosteroids was advised to commence an exercise program. Six weeks later, he complained of persistent aching in the right groin. Plain film at that time was reported as normal. He was referred for bone scintigraphy 1 week later. This study showed changes compatible with avascular necrosis of the right femoral head. Avascular necrosis should be suspected in subjects who are treated for any illness with corticosteroids, and this will often present after minimal trauma.
