Abstract
Bone islands are a benign and usually incidentally discovered lesion that may lead to significant confusion when discovered in patients with a history of malignancy. Scintigraphy has the great advantage of indicating if these lesions are metabolically active, thereby increasing suspicion of more aggressive lesions. These lesions may also cause confusion when found adjacent to sites of non-malignant pathology. The lesion is considered to be developmental or congenital and is in a similar class of bone dysplasia to osteopoikilosis.
