Abstract
There is a large body of evidence that physical activity is critical for the health and welfare of children. In the early formative years, most childhood sports tend to be organized to teach not only health and fitness but also the concepts of teamwork, social skills, and self-reliance. The downside is that the risk of injury progressively increases with the proportion of time devoted to sporting endeavors. Rates of injury are significantly greater in males than females, particularly in contact sports, especially to the growth plates in the long bones and the resultant risk of growth disturbance. Multiple strategies have been developed to reduce the risk of injury in this high-risk group.
