Definition

The dynamic negotiated exchange model of heroism refers to the processes by which the implicit exchange agreement between heroes and hero beneficiaries undergoes change.

The dynamic negotiated exchange (DNE) model of heroism, proposed by Allison and Beggan (2022), frames the identification of societal heroes as a commodity in an exchange relationship between heroes and beneficiaries of heroic action. This exchange relationship has also been called the hero contract (Sumner and Kinsella 2021). Central to the exchange relationship is an unspoken agreement that heroes will provide recipients with a heroic service, and in return recipients will bestow heroes with the hero label and its concomitant benefits.
