Abstract

Ever since its discovery, metal-organic frameworks (MOF) have demonstrated a superior performance in various applications such as sensing, energy, agriculture, and therapeutics. However, its synthesis is dependent on the use of nonrenewable sources and also creates hazardous wastes. Thus, a tradeoff is required between the choice of materials and potential applications for a sustainable environment. Employing greener methods for synthesis of MOF is highly hopeful and can lead to the creation of economic MOF to scale up production. The use of safer solvents, metal ions, and biocompatible linkers has been focused for the green synthesis of MOF. The applications of green nanomaterials in the fields of catalysis, sensing, adsorption, and therapeutics will be summarized in this chapter. Despite its proven advantages, there are few limitations associated with it that cannot be overlooked. Thus, the present chapter also discusses the various challenges associated with it to prevent the potential adverse environmental impact.
