Definition

Process of removal of testis (testicles).

Introduction

Testis is the male gonad, which is responsible for male sexual function and development of male specific sexual characteristics. Testis produces sperms under the influence of male gonadal hormone “testosterone” and “Follicular stimulating hormone” (Tiwana & Leslie, 2022). Testis serves both endocrine as well as exocrine functions (Tiwana & Leslie, 2022). Androgens are produced by the testis (Mäkelä et al., 2019; Tiwana & Leslie, 2022). Testis develops within the abdomen in fetal life and descends to the scrotal sac for its optimal function. Inadequate or nondescent of the testis to the scrotal sac results in a condition, called as “cryptorchidism” (Mäkelä et al., 2019). The development of testis, from the undifferentiated gonadal tissue, is mediated by testis-determining factors (SRY gene), which is located in Y chromosome (Tiwana & Leslie, 2022).
