Introduction: Menstruation in Sexuality Education

Through the last decade emergences of menstruation have intensified through activism, arts, public debate, and lawmaking. This has impacted the circulation of menstrual knowledge, particularly on social media platforms, where activists are displaying menstrual blood and young You Tubers have engaged with menstruation in creative ways (Andreasen, 2020). The newfound attention to menstruation is needed, as menstruation through history has been associated with stigma, shame, and taboo (Robledo-Johnstone & Chrisler, 2020). Recent research with menstruants has shown how the stigmatization of menstruation continues to affect menstruants’ lives. For example, in young menstruants’ labor-intensive and creative strategies to conceal menstruation, or when menstruating bodies are othered through bullying or in the absence of conversation about menstruation and ignorance to menstruating bodies’ needs (Andreasen, 2022).
