Abstract

The term nafaqa, derived from Arabic, pertains to the provision of financial resources to fulfill essential necessities. In the context of Islamic law, it commonly denotes the financial obligations associated with property, marriage, and familial relationships. In a more restricted interpretation, the notion delineates the boundaries of individuals’ material expenses and the societal assets for which they are accountable, within certain parameters. Contrary to prevailing popular belief, the historical roots of the notion can be traced back to ancient civilizations. The concept, which has been introduced in the monotheistic religious literature through the ideas of social duty and solidarity, holds significant significance in the endeavor to combat poverty within its historical and cultural framework. In the context of Islamic law, marriage is regarded as a significant aspect of kinship connections and the broader social framework. It is also anticipated to fulfill the objectives of maintaining social equilibrium and promoting material well-being across society, including addressing issues of poverty and socioeconomic struggles.
