The interoperability of engineering tools is one of the tremendous current challenges of MBSE. Logically linked systems engineering information must also be physically linked in machine-readable models, and tools must “understand” each other when they collaborate. On a purely conceptual level, which is independent of concrete modeling tools, there is no interoperability. Interoperability comes with the distribution of engineering information to different tools and models. Therefore, the discussions about model interoperability are very much dominated by tools. This chapter focuses on the concepts of tool-independent interoperability.
