Facts Versus Fiction in Adolescent Substance Use: Implications for Public Health

Handbook of Substance Misuse and Addictions

Abstract

In this chapter, we present commonly held myths regarding adolescent substance use. These myths include misconceptions around causes of adolescent substance use, consequences of adolescent substance use, and rates of substance use in marginalized and minoritized populations. There is a large body of literature regarding youth substance use that we use to explain whether these myths around substance use are based on the best available science. For each myth, we also present the implications for public health based on the research, including implications for public health professionals, parents, and adolescents themselves.
