SDGs in the European Region

Abstract

There are many global challenges in the world. The availability of clean water is one of them. Although the United Nations (UN) has defined access to drinking water as a human right, there are multitudes of people around the world without access to safe drinking water.

The idea of the Democratia-Aqua-Technica initiative is to transform local and regional water conflicts into pathways to peace and democracy by incorporating innovative science and technological approaches. The objective is to develop innovative and sustainable project ideas to solve the most common conflicts related to water issues, while considering the economic, social, and environmental aspects. This chapter provides insight into the cross-media approach, which is used to work for a sustainable future by bridging the gap between higher education and water practice and technology.

The cross-media approach demonstrates the use of digital solutions such as hackathons and an exploration app in the pursuit of solutions to water crises. Hackathons are used for interdisciplinary project work, and they have a varied discussion platform. The exploration app is a gamification tool, which is used to motivate and fascinate not only the participants but also the public as well. By using a web-based challenge, a suitable solution can be developed by participants from all over the world.
