Abstract

Harmful use of alcohol is an established risk factor for tuberculosis (TB). Patients with TB fail to complete their treatment if they continue consumption of alcohol during the course of their treatment. The harms related to excessive consumption of alcohol are multitude – physical, mental, social, vocational, and financial. Focused efforts are required to address the dual burden of TB and alcohol. Validated screening tools are available for early identification of the interventions required for patients depending on the level of their alcohol abuse. Brief interventions are proven counselling tools for helping patients quit their drinking habits. Collaborative activities between the national TB program and the alcohol de-addiction program would help address the dual burden effectively. This chapter reviews the bidirectional collaborative activities for TB-alcohol and suggests the roadmap for implementation in programmatic settings.
