1 Signs and Symptoms

Non-traumatic orbital hemorrhage is rare, can occur with no underlying pathology or secondary to hemorrhage associated with orbital tumor, vascular malformation or inflammation. Its clinical presentation is related to the confined anatomical space of the hemorrhage. It can occur in association with arterial hypertension or following ocular or orbital surgery. It can occur in defined anatomical spaces such as the subperiosteal space of the orbital roof or around alloplastic materials used in orbital fractures repair. It can rarely be confined to a rectus muscle or its sheath, more commonly in the inferior rectus muscle. In most cases, it resolves spontaneously within weeks without long-term sequelae. Mild thickening of the IR muscle when involved may be anticipated in the minority of cases; however, this has no clinical impact.
