Chronology
FormalPara Definition:The earliest phase of rock art in northern Africa, between 12,000 and 8,000 BC, in which large-scale carvings of animals appeared. These early engravings – in southern Oran, in Algeria, and in Libya – reflect a hunting economy based on the now-extinct giant buffalo Homoioceras antiquus or Bubalus antiquus (hence the name).
