Economics and Sociology of Conventions and Human Resource Management

Abstract

The approach of the economics and sociology of conventions (EC/SC) has become important for the study of action in economic settings. Although studies on managing work and employment have significantly contributed to the development of EC/SC, insights from EC/SC have received limited attention in the field of human resource management (HRM). To facilitate further reception by HRM scholars, this chapter focuses on EC/SC research that addresses the work and employment management themes. After a brief overview of the key aspects of EC/SC, this chapter revisits the conceptual and empirical research conducted by EC/SC scholars, focusing on labor conventions, valuation, ordinary normativity, and investment in forms. It then offers suggestions on how HRM scholars can use this research to address key themes in their field. The chapter concludes with reflections on how EC/SC relates to the existing perspectives in the HRM field.
