Abstract

Urban greening initiatives are generally associated with a rebound of property values and economic activity due to an improved desirability of neighborhoods and urban regions. Research in green gentrification examines patterns of socioeconomic change that may follow the implementation of sustainable and greening interventions in urban areas. While essential to create healthier and more attractive neighborhoods, strategies of urban greening are often employed as part of broader redevelopment schemes targeting affluent markets. In such cases, rising property values and living costs can increase displacement pressures on vulnerable long-standing residents and businesses. Such dynamics have been observed particularly in disadvantaged urban areas whose communities have long been excluded from the benefits of environmental amenities.
