Abstract

Over the past half century, bone marrow transplantation and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation have been seen as a lifesaving process for patients with life threatening malignant and nonmalignant hematopoietic stem cell disorders and are currently used with increasing frequency to treat numerous malignant and nonmalignant diseases. The initial anxiety of the first procedures was followed by significant steps in the advancements in techniques, indications, and supportive therapy. Today we are able to perform an enormous number of hematopoietic stem cell transplant procedures due to the fact that there are scientifically advanced donor registries and hematopoietic stem cell transplant centers. Within the next pages, we will try to elaborate on the first years of sporadic worldwide procedures to the scientifically advanced cord and haploidentical transplants and the establishment of high quality donor registries and quality assurance of the transplant procedures worldwide.
