Abstract
This study focused on understanding the perception of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) by local stakeholders in two Latin American cities: Bogotá and Lima. We highlight the type of NbS being developed in each city, its requirements, constraints, and potential negative effects. Social data based on the perceptions of local stakeholders were collected through 26 face-to-face, semi-structured interviews. Three main types of NbS approaches were identified: policies, projects, and decision-making committees. The limitations for implementing these NbS include lack of funding opportunities, weak governance, and a perceived public disinterest in environmental issues. NbS critically hinge on effective communication; improved technical capacities of practitioners; development of public policies that support these NbS; public engagement in the planning, design and management of NbS; and the creation of decision-making committees. Minimizing the potential negative effects of NbS, such as increased gentrification, is important for cities with similar characteristics as those case studies presented here.
