Abstract

Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) is a very useful tool for pretreatment staging of upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract lesions. It allows the endoscopist to determine the depth of invasion within the wall layers of the GI tract as well as invasion in to any surrounding structures such as lymph nodes and vasculature. In addition to identification of any surrounding malignant lymph nodes, EUS also allows sampling these lymph nodes via fine needle aspiration or fine needle biopsy to confirm malignant involvement.
