Abstract

Ampullary adenomas and adenocarcinomas, which account for more than 90% of ampullary neoplasms, are a rare group of gastrointestinal tumors. They often represent an incidental finding.

Preoperative diagnosis and staging are fundamental to establish the optimal therapeutic strategy. Endoscopic snare papillectomy represents, nowadays, the first-line treatment for noninvasive ampullary neoplasms, potentially providing a curative “en bloc” resection in many cases. It is a challenging procedure with high risk of complications (bleeding, pancreatitis, perforation); therefore, it should be performed in referral centers by experienced endoscopists.
