Overview

Aging in place has become a main concept both for research and for public policy design with the purpose that the older adults stay in their homes and communities as long as possible, because it allows them to maintain their independence, autonomy, connection, and social support from friends and family. In addition, various governments have accepted aging in place as a positive economic way for society and families to fulfill their care responsibilities and avoid the costs of institutional care options (Cheng et al. 2011).

Documents related to aging in place have had a constant increase starting from the 1980s, initially dealing with the issue indirectly, and from 2000 on, explicitly. The concept of aging in place related to the environment has been the main approach in relation to gerontological services, health, functionality, social support, home care, and more recently with technology (Vasunilashorn et al. 2012).
