Abstract

As a special treat to our readers, the final three chapters of this handbook provide short biographies of the most notable visionaries and pioneers of lunar exploration and development, along with an overview of their most notable accomplishments and perspectives, both on lunar and human space exploration. Specifically, in this chapter, we are presenting the following seven pioneers of human space exploration (Astronauts):

  • Neil Armstrong

  • Buzz Aldrin

  • Michael Collins

  • Harrison Schmitt

  • John Young

  • Jeffrey Hoffman

  • Alexey Leonov

The selection of the seven pioneers presented here is certainly a subjective one. There are so many other astronauts and cosmonauts who made crucial contributions over the past decades.

For some of these pioneers we also present original essays that were provided exclusively by the respective authors for The Lunar Base Handbook by Peter Eckart (McGraw-Hill 1999/2006).
