Definition
Philippa Garrett Fawcett (1868–1948), the daughter of suffragist leader Dame Millicent Garrett Fawcett, was a mathematician, physicist, educator, and civil servant known for her accomplishment on the Mathematics Tripos at the University of Cambridge. She made history as the first woman to score “above Senior Wrangler” in 1890, a feat that made international headlines and provided further support for women’s higher education. Her remarkable achievement inspired many women to pursue higher education in disciplines previously thought to be unsuitable for women. Her connections with Newnham College afforded her various professional opportunities, from research scholarships to extended trips abroad. In the latter half of her life, Fawcett dedicated herself to civil service, establishing school systems in South Africa and maintaining secondary schools and teacher training colleges throughout London.
