Definition

Frances Eleanor Trollope (1835–1913) wrote 12 novels, 2 short stories, a chapter of an experimental collaborative novel, a play, and several works of travel writing. Her work focuses on family dynamics, with a particular focus on female relations. They often feature travelers, particularly from Italy, and several of her works revolve around theatrical families and actors. Though she is not frequently read today, Trollope was a popular author in her own lifetime and wrote for well-known periodicals such as All the Year Round and The Graphic. Her relationships to Anthony Trollope and Charles Dickens have led to the misattribution of her work to those writers in several instances. Though these relationships have been beneficial to the preservation of materials relating to Trollope, they have also overshadowed her.
